In an article titled, “Aberrant phenotype and transcriptome expression during fiber cell wall thickening caused by the mutation of the Im gene in immature fiber (im) mutantin Gossypium hirsutum L., published in the current issue of BMC Genomics, Cheng Wang and four of his associates claimed that the topic constitutes an ideal research material for exploring the development of fiber secondary wall (SCW). Their research study confirmed that the significant differences exist betweenrecommended culivar TM-1 and im mutant in cellulose content, thickness of cell wall and sucrose content together with asynchronous fiber developmental program of SCW process. The authors proposethat Im is an important regulatory gene influencing temporal differences in expression of genes related to fiber SCW biosynthesis.
