Our Hats off to BRRI Breeders – High zinc rice variety, Brri 62 released

The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) breeders developed high zinc rice variety, Brri dhan -62. HarvestPlus, supported this  biofortification project under the Washington-based global agro-science coordinating body Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The newly released outstanding variety which has got approval of  the National Seed Board is suitable for treatment of diarrhea and pneumonia-induced illness preventing childhood deaths and arrest of their stunting growth. This variety is also an early-maturing variety for Aman season.  BRRI scientists claim that in the development of the zinc-rich variety they are ahead of their Indian counterparts. It may be mentioned here that Bangladesh Nuclear Agriculture Institute (BINA) came up with NSB-approved four new rice varieties. Of these Bina-11 and Bina-12 are submergence-tolerant, while Bina-13 is an aromatic variety like Kalizira but with a higher yield potential. GNOBB take this opportunity to compliment BINA scientists also for their pioneering work in developing flood-tolerant rice varieties capable of  withstanding submergence.
