Dear GNOBB members,
Upon my request, one of the GNOBB co-founders, Dr. Hemayet Ullah, Associate Professor, Biology Department, Howard College, Washington DC has described the research activities at his Department. I am posting verbatim the account given by him a short while ago, “My lab is making very good progress towards developing small compounds capable of countering salt stress in rice. To my knowledge this approach is the first to address a stress-based physiological process in plants with a drug like compounds which can one day be developed as a fertilizer like molecules during environmental stresses (drought and salt stress). This will overcome the GMO approach. We have already patented some of the compounds.
GNOBB wish him Godspeed and an astounding progress in his endeavor to develop a fertilizer like molecules which the growers can use during environmental stresses (drought and salt stress). One Bangladeshi student will be doing Ph.D. under my guidance and another is likely to follow shortly thereafter.”
Dr. Hemayet is visiting Dhaka for one week (August 3-10), and is expected to give a seminar at either DU Biochemistry or at BRAC U. I Those of you who would like to meet him, can do so through correspondence at hullah@howard.edu.
