Heartiest Congratulations to GNOBB founder member Dr. Abidur Rahman and his team for identifying the long-sought potassium-independent cesium transporters in plants. The team from Iwate University, Japan in collaboration with the National University corporation Shimane University and The University of Tokyo has conducted the experiment. This cesium transporter has the ability to clean up the contaminated soil utilizing the phytoremediation technique. Thus, harmful substances in the soil can be absorbed and the soil can be purified. Potassium is an essential element and using potassium transporter overexpressor to absorb cesium can make depletion of potassium in the soil harming the growth of plants in that soil. The group identified this specific cesium transporter for the first time, which does not depend on potassium. This identification can help utilize plants to absorb radioactive cesium efficiently without depleting soil potassium which will be very beneficial, especially in the utilization of radioactive cesium containing soil for agricultural and other usages.
